Smurfette: No Smurfing Idea How to Fix It

IMG_0697

I wanted to make something blue…like really, really blue. In that respect, I succeeded with this drink. Unfortunately I failed everywhere else.

Here’s what I tried:

1 shot of Bacardi Rum
1/2 shot of Blue Curaçao
1/2 shot of lemon juice
12 blueberries

I crushed up the blueberries in a shaker and added the rest of the ingredients and ice. I shook it all up and strained the contents into a glass.

A series of disasters followed.

On first sip, I couldn’t get past the Blue Curaçao. All I could taste was that orange peel liqueur. I thought maybe all the alcohol needed some watering down. So I added a splash of pineapple juice. Big mistake. This just made the drink too citrusy and sweet. So I added a dollop of angostura bitters. This did nothing.

I was left feeling blah.

Next time, I might try something harsher than rum, like gin or vodka instead. Bacardi rum is perhaps too friendly — it mingles easily with other ingredients and doesn’t like to shine. This drink needs something a bit edgier. Smurfette, after all, deserves a better drink named in her honour.
